12 Stays to Enjoy Ascension 2022 (Long Weekend Breaks)

Bridging the weekend of Ascension and looking for a place in nature? So are many others! Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of 12 outdoor stays that are ideal for long weekend breaks and still have availability for the four-day weekend of May 2022.

Norway: The long weekend break of Kristi Himmelsfartsdag

For many Norwegians, Ascension weekend is the first opportunity to enjoy a proper hiking trip with balmy weather. From Oslo, head out on Wednesday night and drive an hour (or 30 minutes from the airport) to the beautiful, wooden Mjøsli Lodge in Espa. Here you get to enjoy nature in abundance as well as Scandinavian comforts like a handcrafted sauna.

For an experience closer to nature and, spend a long weekend break in this specially designed yurt in an Arctic outfield camp. The hamlet of Rebbenes is yours to explore, as is the sea you’re overlooking. Grab a kayak, go fishing, hike around the island, or light a bonfire and spend the nights stargazing.

Looking for a more futuristic stay in nature? The Arctic dome in Hemsedal offers a unique open view to the green surroundings and mountainous backdrop. It’s like sleeping in the open air, except you enjoy the comfort of a king-size double bed and a woodburner. Cooking on a fire pan outside keeps you grounded and well connected to the environment.

Denmark: Kristi Flyvedag long weekend break

People in Denmark and especially children sometimes call ‘Christ’s flying day’ as Jesus went up in the air as he ascended to heaven. Like in Norway, Ascension weekend is celebrated for the opportunity to head out rather than for its religious meaning.

Ascension weekend can be a great getaway for the whole family in this fantastically cozy family tent in Væggerløse. Inside there’s room for 6 people and outside there’s a big firepot for meals and fireside stories.

For a more traditional type of tent, stay in real tipi in the middle of a beautiful orchard in Kettinge. It’s more basic than the family tent, but that’s why this is a nature camp. Not only are the surroundings gorgeous, but you can also have fresh fruit from the orchard for breakfast.

Another amazing way to spend long weekend breaks with a company of six is in this charming summer barn in the middle of a national park. The ground floor is indeed rustic and barn-ish but the same can’t be said for the top floor where you get to have a good night’s rest. The sommerstalden is part of an organic farm, set in an area great for fishing and hiking and everything you’d want to do on a four-day weekend.

Sweden long weekend breaks: Kristi himmelsfärdsdag

Ascension day may originally be a Christan holiday but for the Swedes it’s all about nature. On this Thursday, people traditionally headed into the woods very early in the morning to hear the birds at sunrise.

Not many observe the old custom of listening to birds at sunrise, but plenty of Swedes head out to nature during the long weekend. You can do the same glamping in the forest of Bjuråker, where it’s just you and your plus one, the trees, and a lake view.

For campervanners, Ascension weekend means hopping in the RV and driving to a remote stretch of nature, like this RV spot with an view of the Gullmarsfjorden. Patio with barbecue included for culinary long weekend breaks.

The weekend of Jeudi de l’Ascension in France

In France, too, Ascension Thursday is the perfect reason to take the Friday off and have a long weekend break. The French have a name for it – faire le pont. So where to bridge the Friday and spend Ascension weekend?

Pack a tent and camp in the medieval village of Vesc, in the heart of the Drome Provençale, perhaps. This family-oriented campsite overlooks a green valley and enjoys some of the purest air in France.

For pure air, you can also pitch a tent in the Corsican mountains. It does get a little warmer here than on the mainland, but that’s why the campsite has a swimming pool. Oh, and a petanque court – because it’s still France.

Hemelvaartsdag in the Netherlands

People in the Netherlands, too, head out of the city and to nature on Ascension day. In fact, the Dutch have been doing that since forever. They’d used to get up early to go dauwtrappen (strolling through the morning dew) in the fields for supposed health benefits.

That myth might have been busted, but we think that spending four days in a cozy bell tent on a micro camping in Drenthe does bring real health benefits

Looking for a proper setting to go dauwtrappen? Head to the farmland of Friesland and park your RV at Wartenster’s Plattelands Plek. Wake up to cows mooing and stroll around the farmland covered in morning dew before taking to the many cycling lanes of the area connecting you to nature or to the city of Leeuwarden. Now that’s a classic day in the heart of Friesland.
